Iceland | Geothermal pool

What's in the photo?

This photograph is one of the most special geothermal pools I’ve seen in Iceland. Its shape and colorful chalk layers around the source makes it look like an eye. You may think this is a massive pool or lake, but in fact it’s not even two meters wide.

About the photograph

Seen from above, it looks almost like a painting, though every color and shape here is entirely the work of nature. I captured this natural phenomenon in one of the country's most active volcanic areas. Minerals and heat from below the surface create these intense colors, from deep greens to turquoise blues, surrounded by rings of ochre and rust. The patterns form naturally, shaped by heat, water and the minerals dissolved within it.
